‘Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective’ First Impressions
Sissel has a lot of problems, but the least of them is that he’s dead. Well, not dead-dead, but dead. I’ll explain: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective [Free] is all about what Sissel has gained in the afterlife. Like a common ghoul, this guy can rattle mundane objects, activate levers and buttons, and possess stuff. He can also decidedly un-ghoulishly rewind time, which is a trick that comes in pretty handy; a lot of the people he knows tend to die, and he needs these people to help him with his biggest problem: memory loss.
Ghost Trick first saw a release on Nintendo DS around a year ago. This isn’t its debut on iOS, though. A couple of months after the DS release, Capcom dropped a Universal version of the game on the Japanese App Store. Now, the rest of the world is finally getting to see a version of this port tonight.

And it seems like it’s OK from a technical standpoint. In my modest amount of time with it, I haven’t seen any port-specific issues like stuttering or flickering. It controls pretty well, too, and caters to your finger just about as well as it did to the stylus.
There’s some stuff still bothering me. The assets aren’t as high of a resolution as I would like. Also, a good sixth of the screen is covered by a thick layer of UI that, it seems, is simply there to keep the pixel density high. It’s weird.
In case you missed out on Ghost Trick, it breaks down like this: Sissel is often charged with reversing people’s deaths and he has to use his powers to do so. Each death is like a puzzle, basically, that has you opening doors, spiritually oozing to adjacent objects, and otherwise setting up Rube Goldberg-ian scenarios that’ll change that person’s fate.
In most cases, you’re watching a death, infesting that person’s body in order to rewind time, and then actively trying to disrupt that sequence. The solutions to puzzles seem to be mired in weird video game logic, but the saving grace here is that there is a single and true solution to every puzzle. You just gotta find it, you know?
I’ve been having a blast so far, by the way. This is a pretty thoughtful, if not challenging game with some insane, but fun-to-discover solutions. And while the minutes of overly long exposition is starting to wear me out, I’m digging the characters and the humor. Just wait until you meet dog, man. Wait for it.
We’ll definitely continue on with Ghost Trick, and try to give you something much more definitive than this in the near future. This is a free release, though — the first two chapters, which take about 60 or 70 minutes to complete, are what you’ll get with a $0 download, so that should give you a good indication of what you’re getting into. ‘My Little Monster’ Review – Let’s Roar Down Memory Lane Together
Games like My Little Monster [99¢] are nefarious. In spite of being a largely thankless collection of repetitive chores, they have this way of making you fuss over them constantly. They’re like kids except without all the collateral benefits. Just ask anyone who has ever owned a Tamagotchi or any other of those ‘virtual pet simulator’ things.
I use the term loosely, by the way. My Little Monster isn’t exactly what you would call a Tamagotchi, though the simplicity of the gameplay here is definitely on the same level. At the beginning of every in-game day, you’ll be given the opportunity to decide whether you want to purchase new hats, upgrade one of your three skills or improve various statistics. This, in turn, is accomplished by spending the currency you earn from your daily fights.
Now, before you get excited about the idea of rumbling with other leviathans, combat here isn’t all too fancy either. You have no direct control over the fights themselves. For the most part, your time will be spent tapping on various words on the screen, tapping on the ability you want to use, and a fair bit of waiting. Assuming you survive, you’ll then have your score tallied and the whole cycle will begin anew.
Yes, I know. It’s kind of underwhelming but that doesn’t make it a bad game. In an odd way, it’s actually one of the reasons that My Little Monster works so well. You can play it anywhere, any time. Because so little brainpower is needed to propel the game forward, it’s ideal for meetings and long, uncomfortable road trips. Of course, things would be different were the presentation any less stellar.
really did a brilliant job (granted, they could have gone with a better choice of fonts but that’s me being nit-picky) with the delivery in My Little Monster. The nostalgia-inducing visuals, the silly cut-scenes, the menagerie of eccentric enemies, the offbeat dialogue, the ludicrous plot – they all go along together like Japanese curry on rice. I mean, really? Is it even possible to dislike that little green guy and his earnest quest to grow up and destroy the world? I thought so.
Though considerably shorter than I would have liked it to be, My Little Monster is a reasonable amount of bang for your buck. If ‘virtual pet simulators’ weren’t a thing back when you were growing up, you might not quite enjoy it as much as some. But for the rest of you, this may be a pleasant trip down memory lane.

First 3 ‘Ace Attorney’ Games Being Remastered, Heading to iOS
Fans of witty, courtroom-based gameplay have something to look forward to on the App Store soon. During a Japanese press event over the weekend that saw the announcement of Ace Attorney 5, Capcom also went on to announce that the first 3 Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games would be getting an HD makeover and are coming to iOS as Ace Attorney 123HD, according to .
The original Phoenix Wright [$4.99] from the Game Boy Advance was ported to the Nintendo DS in 2005, and then ported again to iOS back in May of 2010. It was a a fairly straight port of the DS version, so no added bells and whistles, but remained a strong game simply because the source material was so good. Owners of this original iOS version will be able to update their games to the new HD versions when they go live. Newcomers will be able to download the first two chapters of Ace Attorney 123HD for free, with additional episodes available as in-app purchases.

Ace Attorney 123HD is said to be coming “shortly” and we’ll let you know just as soon as there are any new details regarding pricing, available chapters, iPad support, or a firm date of release.

Cave Releases New ‘Dodonpachi Blissful Death’ Trailer
A couple of weeks back we told you that Cave was readying a release of Dodonpachi Blissful Death for iOS, a port of the Japanese shooter Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou and the fourth game in the Donpachi series of bullet hell shmups. Over the weekend, Cave released the first promo trailer for Blissful Death on iOS.
It sounds like Dodonpachi Blissful Death will follow the formula of their Bug Princess [$4.99/Lite] iOS port in that it will forgo a retooled Smartphone mode and will only have the arcade version of the game. It’s too bad, as I really enjoy the Smartphone modes in their previous iOS games, but it’s also not surprising given their recent poor sales results. It could be that they just can’t dump as many resources into iOS ports anymore.
The upside to that was that Bug Princess came in at a lower price than their other iOS shooters, but Cave has yet to release any pricing info for Blissful Death, or a firm release date beyond just February. Also, you’ll need at least 4th generation hardware or an iPad 2 for the game, and Cave is being a bit cheeky regarding whether the game will be Universal or not. We’ll let you know if any more information surfaces, and you can bet we’ll be all over Dodonpachi Blissful Death when it launches next month.

Taito Announces ‘Darius Burst: Second Prologue’ for iOS
Following the port of their 1993 arcade shooter RayForce [$11.99] to the App Store, Taito announced over the weekend that they’ll be bringing another shooter, Darius Burst: Second Prologue, to iOS in the future, .
Darius Burst was originally a Sony PSP game released in late 2009, and was an official new entry in the fabled Darius series of shmups. An arcade version came a year later called Darius Burst Another Chronicle, and it was especially noteworthy due to its . Sadly, neither game was released outside of Japan.

It’s unknown whether the iOS version of Darius Burst is based off of either of the previous versions of the game, but my guess would be that it is an enhanced remake of the original that will have its own special iOS specific features. That’s just wishful speculation on my part, however.
originally broke this news and also managed to nab the first screens of Darius Burst: Second Prologue which you see here, but unfortunately there are no other details on the game – like pricing or release date – at this time. After the somewhat controversial launch price for what was a fairly standard port of RayForce, it will also be interesting to see what price Darius Burst clocks in at. Just as soon as we have more news on Darius Burst: Second Prologue, we’ll let you know.

Cave Announces ‘Dodonpachi Blissful Death’ Coming to iOS
Bullet hell experts Cave have their next forthcoming iOS shooter Dodonpachi Blissful Death. Known as Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou in Japan, it’s the fourth game in the Donpachi series and was followed up with Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu several years later, which we know as Dodonpachi Resurrection [$7.99/Lite] here on the US App Store.
There aren’t any details just yet for Dodonpachi Blissful Death, but based on Cave’s previous iOS releases I think it’s pretty safe to assume a few things. It will likely include an arcade mode that stays faithful to the original release as well as a special Smartphone mode that has been retooled for touch screens and given some additional features.
While most of Cave’s iOS releases follow this formula, they bucked that trend with their last release Bug Princess [$4.99/Lite], which was more or less just a direct port of the arcade version. This wasn’t exactly a bad thing, as the arcade game was (and is) amazingly fun, but I’ve grown to really like the special Smartphone modes that Cave puts so much thought into. Hopefully we’ll see this in Dodonpachi Blissful Death.
Beyond that, you can expect multiple ship types, weapon augmenters called Element Dolls, insane combo scoring, and hidden loops and bosses. So basically, tons of Cave shmup goodness. Really great news too, considering Cave has been contemplating focusing more on less hardcore, more social games. Glad to see them still bringing great titles to iOS.
As soon as we have more information on Dodonpachi Blissful Death’s arrival on the App Store, like pricing and release date, we’ll be sure to let you know. For now though, it’s probably safe to and start drooling.

‘Adventure Bar Story’ Coming To iPhone In February
Adventure Bar Story, a -like RPG that originally released in Japan as Adventure Bar of Wonderland Portable on PSP, is being localized and fitted for iPhone and iPod Touch. , the studio behind this new effort, revealed its intentions to do this , and even dropped a few new screenshots to stimulate the community. We’re including a much less, er, eye-melting below.
Knock out the “item” part of Recettear’s title and insert “bar” if you want a decent idea of what you’ll be getting into with Adventure Bar Story. The goal is to have the best bar in the kingdom; To accomplish this, you’ll need to dungeon crawl and harvest the component parts of a variety of monsters to win cooking and drink contests. You know, just like in real life.
As of right now, the title is not slated to incorporate iPad support. That’ll be a thing the studio evaluates based on sales. Pricing, by the way, has yet to be confirmed.

‘Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time!’ Review – Don’t Forget to Clean Up Your Mess
Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time! [99¢] has everything a good zombie game needs: guns, girls, guts, green goo and a generous amount of cleaning equipment. Oh, come on. Don’t raise that eyebrow at me. You know it’s true. Every good shoot-out tends to leave an inevitable mess and Zombie Wonderland 2, unlike so many of its peers, is not afraid to acknowledge it.
Here, in this goofy little defense/time-management/real-time strategy title, you’ll have the dubious pleasure of playing as the redneck stereotype Chuck. Being the responsible Zombie Cleaner (and someone totally oblivious to the idea of job security) that he is, Chuck will stop at nothing to rid the world of the cannibalistic undead.
As you might have guessed, this isn’t a particularly easy task. You’re going to have to do everything from bringing a vegetarian vampire his lactose-rich treat to protecting pet goldfish in Medieval Japan.

Silly, eh? If that description hasn’t scared you off just yet, this might spell the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Much like the story itself, Zombie Wonderland 2 is a fair bit of mindless fun, the kind that can easily rob you of a few hours of your time. If what you want is a simple, silly hybrid of the aforementioned genres, stop reading and go download it already.
However, if you’re an Apple App Store connoisseur, this may be where you sit down and ponder the direction of your dollar a bit more. Like a serving of fast food, Zombie Wonderland 2 is both satisfying and unfulfilling all at the same time.
Gameplay here is relatively straightforward. Each stage consists of you being told to defend a certain item from zombies for a number of nights. Of course, as a Zombie Cleaner, you’re also going to have to do your best to ensure that there is no unnecessary gunk on the floors at the end of the night, something easier said than done.
To accomplish this, you’re going to have to make use of your trusty shotgun ‘Betsy’, cleaning implements, turrets, wooden planks, unusual bullets and a peculiar assortment of limited-use weapons. Controls are exceedingly simple. To attack a zombie, you touch it with a finger. To board up a window, you tap it with a finger. To summon your infant Death Worm, you – you get the picture.
Sadly, though, it isn’t quite as exciting as it sounds. Your nightly escapades will mostly consist of you boarding up windows and playing ‘whack-a-mole’ with the festering onslaught. Regardless of how many you purchase, you’ll only get access to one turret at a time. One. Uno. Satu.
To make things even worse, your turrets are about as impervious to zombie attacks as cookies are to the Cookie Monster. More often than not, you’ll find yourself attempting to fix it while corralling flaming cadavers. It’s the same with the limited-use weapons and the various bullet types. Sure, you might have a dozen but you’ll ever get to use one variety at a time.
All said and done, however, Zombie Wonderland 2 is still an enjoyable piece of work. The over-the-top silliness and the bright, colorful graphics feel reminiscent of an old Saturday morning cartoon. The game’s just difficult enough to make it challenging and simple enough to engage in without requiring too much of a forethought.

CAVE to Focus More on Social Games Following Poor Earnings
Here’s some unfortunate news. that Japanese developer is switching up its strategy following some disappointing earnings from the first half of their fiscal year, which for them starts on the first of June. As a result, they’ve downgraded their forecasts for the rest of the year, which runs until the end of May, and have reportedly put some of their current titles on hold to allocate more resources into “social games”, according to the company’s recently released earnings report summarized in English by .
Now, us iOS gamers associate CAVE with their awesome App Store shooters like Bug Princess [$4.99/Lite], Dodonpachi Resurrection [$7.99/Lite], and Deathsmiles [$11.99/Lite]. I don’t really like thinking about the developer of some of the most hardcore games around suddenly switching gears to the surging social/casual games space.
However, CAVE has a separate division focused on their mobile titles and I would imagine they are reasonably pleased with the performance of their games on iOS and Android. I think the problem lies more in getting people to buy a somewhat niche product like a bullet hell shooter on the home consoles for $60 or more. Their earnings report indicates that in the face of a stagnant retail gaming market, retailers are more hesitant to buy and stock as many games as CAVE had projected them to.
It’s not indicated which projects are being put on hold, and hopefully we’ll see CAVE continuing to bring their fantastic library of shooters to iOS, as well as more original titles like Mushihimesama Bug Panic [$6.99/Lite]. It will be interesting to see what direction CAVE moves in both the mobile and console space in 2012, and we’ll definitely be keeping our eye out for any new developments.

Famitsu Reveals Taito’s ‘Rayforce’; Coming This Winter
It’s always great to see companies with so much history (like Taito, in this case) bringing some of it to the App store. According to [], Taito will be bringing Rayforce to the App Store, and it’ll be hitting at some point this winter. (Or, before March 20th, for those of you playing along at home.)
Rayforce is a vertical shooter which I’d guess not many North Americans have much experience with. It originally hit in the early 90’s, with a new name for seemingly every region it was released in, you might remember it as Galactic Attack or Gunlock. Or, you might not remember it at all, since outside of Japanese and European arcades it was only ever available as a Sega Saturn game until PC ports started materializing much later.
